I am the daughter of a teenaged gang banger and preppy but swaggy drummer of a mama’s boy. The granddaughter of a sharecropper, two addicts, a blues musician, and two veterans. From the beginning, I was raised to be none of those things and only urged to be Britney (né Scott). Design came very naturally to me. My father is an artist himself. However, it was the fashion and art sense by my youth grandmothers that laid the foundation in my impressional mind that has never left me. So for years, I was convinced that fashion was my way. I explored many options but nothing stuck. What would forever be a part of me, however, was my creative spirit. So here, I am at a crossroads. Jobs are boring me with the exception of the occasional opportunity to let my creative ideas shine. After having enough of clocking into a passionless environment, I asked myself, how could work every day earning a great living feeling like I’ve played all day? Having been working independently of my 9 to 5 as a graphic designer, I needed to make a slight shift and the idea of being a UX designer fell in my lap. It would afford me to make a living wage in a growing industry and be creative. It is also important to me to diversify the industry not only for African Americans but for women as well.
